Shungite is a new age mineral that exists stably between amorphous carbon and graphite crystal containing carbon. Shungite is a fossil of precambarian sediments which survive at the bottom of the sea. There are dull, semi-dull, semi-bright and bright Shungites that are available commercially in the form of pyramids and pendants. The standard pH of water has been reasoned as 7.0. It is said that scarce Elite Shungite accounts for less than 1% of the total Shungite available. It is solid in its natural shape and is therefore difficult to reshape or mould into another object.

Regular Shungite is industrially mined on a far larger scale than Elite Shungite as a result of it being more common. Regular Shungite has a 30-50% carbon content and is still considered a high-quality product. Regular Shungite can also be shaped and resized with ease.
